Badge Butler. Serving up the best badges to suit your needs…

Britain’s most experienced badge maker for over 60 years…

Thomas Fattorini was founded in 1827 by Antonio Fattorini an Italian speaking immigrant who settled in Yorkshire where he established a number of retail outlets specialising in jewellery, watches and fancy goods including barometers.

In 1964 the company opened a factory in Manchester to relieve the labour shortages Birmingham was experiencing in the motor industry and other booming Midland industries. This factory grew to become the centre for the design, development and manufacture of plastic name badges in the UK . A patent taken out for the first badge, named the “Personal Badge”, has now expired and after 50 years is still being copied today. The factory now produces the widest variety of plastic name badges in the country, and is determined to maintain its place at the head of the competition by continuing to improve its products and techniques, the skills of its staff, and the services it can offer to it’s customers.

Thomas Fattorini Ltd is a family owned and run manufacturing business based over three sites in the UK.

Antonio Fattorini

The story started with Antonio an Italian who settled in Leeds as a Jeweller in 1826

The sons of Antonio opened up jewellery shops in Bradford, Harrogate, Leeds and Skipton. This was his second son Innocent’s shop in Skipton and was affectionately known as “Fattorini’s corner” – located at the bottom of the High Street and on the corner of  Newmarket Street. Innocent’s son Thomas, took over the business, hence the Thomas in our name.

It was a traditional jewellery shop that also specialised sports trophies, medals and badges.

To satisfy the demand from the jewellery shops, Thomas Fattorini opened a factory in 1923 in Birmingham, Hockley St as this was where the main UK manufacturing was at that time. In 1927 they moved into larger premises in Regent St, 300yds away, naming it  Trafalgar works

It was a typical manufacturing operation in the jewellery quarter specialising principally in the manufacture of Badges, Medals and Trophies.

The Westbourne Rd Works in Urmston, Manchester

Due to increasing difficulty finding skilled workers in Birmingham, the company opened a small school badge making unit on the ground floor in the Barton Mill in Eccles. The space was not very practical so a new building was sought in Westbourne Road, which is now called home.

It was in this building that Thomas Fattorini (Great-great grandson of Antonio) developed and patented the first plastic name badge in the UK
